I’ve had Parkinson’s for around 10 years and had DBS surgery about a year ago. Over the last six months, I noticed that my speech was becoming slower and more slurred, so I decided to get some professional help.

I spoke to Celia and immediately felt that I was in good hands, so we started an online LSVT course together.

I’ll admit that the first few sessions felt a little strange. Sitting opposite someone and repeatedly going “aaaah” at them with your mouth wide open isn’t something that comes naturally! But you soon get over that, and it just becomes part of the routine.

The course does require some effort and, particularly, finding the time to do the exercises regularly. But it really is a case of you get out what you put in. Celia was brilliant throughout — knowledgeable, encouraging, patient and with just the right amount of humour. She made the sessions relaxed while keeping me motivated and focused.

The results were much better than I expected. After about a month, my speech was noticeably clearer, louder and at a more normal speed. Even better, my family and friends noticed the difference without me having to tell them.

For me, it wasn’t just about speaking more clearly. Being able to communicate more easily and confidently has made a real difference to everyday life.

I’d thoroughly recommend Celia and LSVT to anyone with Parkinson’s who is experiencing problems with their voice or speech. It does take commitment, but if you put the effort in, the results can be genuinely remarkable.

And yes, you do eventually get used to sitting in front of someone shouting “aaaah” at the top of your voice!
