Parkinson’s disease affects the speech of 89% of those with the condition. Published data documents the effectiveness of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) in improving vocal loudness, intonation (rise and fall of the voice), voice quality as well as unclear speech, diminished facial expression and impaired swallowing.  LSVT LOUD® is evidence based, internationally recognised and recommended in the NICE guidelines in the UK for voice problems associated with Parkinson’s disease.

LSVT LOUD®  has also been shown to be effective in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

How does it LSVT LOUD® work?

LSVT LOUD® improves vocal loudness by stimulating the muscles of the voice box (larynx) and speech mechanism through a systematic hierarchy of exercises.  Focused on a single goal – “Speak LOUD!” –  LSVT LOUD® brings the voice to an improved, healthy vocal loudness without strain.

Why the intensity of sessions?

This intensity is consistent with theories of motor learning and skill acquisition as well as with the principles of neural plasticity (the capacity of the nervous system to change in response to signals) and is critical to attaining optimal results.  The treatment not only stimulates the motor system but also incorporates sensory awareness training to help individuals with PD recognise that their voice is too soft, convincing them that the louder voice is within normal limits, and making them comfortable with the new louder voice.

Clients are trained to self-generate the necessary loudness to make their speech understood.

LSVT LOUD® Testimonials:

“By the end of the first week, I was already making clear progress. My wife particularly noticed that I was speaking more clearly, and more loudly.  She could hear what I said first time around and instances of being asked, “What did you say?” reduced.  In social situations I became more confident and was happier to join in the conversation.  By the end of the fourth week the results from the exercises compared with those of the first week were very impressive.

Another benefit is my improved saliva management.  I had stopped eating in public. The exercises have increased the strength of the muscles involved in swallowing.  LSVT LOUD  has made a huge difference to my life”

“After a month of LSVT LOUD voice training I can truly say that I have achieved a very important victory over Parkinson’s disease. I and my immediate family and friends have heard and seen a marked improvement in my voice, confidence and willingness to initiate and join in conversation, which is being normal! I will have to keep up the daily voice training for the rest of my life but it will be worth it.  I couldn’t have achieved this without Celia’s help, patience and enthusiasm.”

“By the end of the first week, I could see that I was making clear progress.  I was now being heard and started to become more confident and happier, enjoying once again company with friends and no longer being scared to answer the telephone.

As the weeks progressed, my confidence improved, and it was showing in the results of the exercises.  What a difference four weeks can make!  I was now speaking freely to friends, and not being asked “What did you say?”

Please do not suffer in silence, get help and support!”

“Celia has transformed my husband’s life with Parkinson’s. Like many sufferers, he was speaking increasingly inaudibly and taking less and less part in life around him, shrinking into his own world. Using LSVT LOUD, Celia has taught him to project his voice and is now back at normal levels of audibility.”

-LS, St Mary Bourne
